VFB Release Reports - Implementation Summary

✅ Task Completed Successfully

What Was Accomplished

  1. 📁 Organized Repository Structure

    • Created releases/ subfolder for all release reports
    • Moved all existing release reports (release_report_*.md) to the releases folder
    • Created scripts/ folder with Python automation scripts
    • Set up .github/workflows/ for GitHub Actions automation
  2. 🤖 GitHub Actions Automation

    • Workflow: release-reports.yml triggers on new tag creation (v* pattern)
    • Manual Trigger: Supports workflow_dispatch for manual report generation
    • Automatic Processing: Generates reports, updates git tags, commits files
    • Cleanup: Runs maintenance scripts and validates the process
  3. 🐍 Python Scripts Suite

    • generate_release_report.py: Single tag processor for GitHub Actions
    • generate_release_reports_batch.py: Batch processor for all tags
    • cleanup.py: Maintenance and validation script
  4. 📋 Git Tag Annotations

    • All 9 release tags now have comprehensive markdown reports as annotations
    • Reports include summary statistics, changes from previous releases, and ontology content
    • Accessible via git show <tag> or GitHub interface

Automated Workflow Process

  1. Trigger: New tag matching v* is pushed to repository
  2. Setup: GitHub Actions checks out repo, sets up Python 3.11
  3. Generation: Runs generate_release_report.py with target tag
  4. Analysis: Extracts data from content_report.md and pdb_report.tsv
  5. Comparison: Compares with previous release for delta reporting
  6. Annotation: Updates git tag with full markdown report
  7. Storage: Saves report file to releases/ folder
  8. Cleanup: Runs maintenance scripts and validation
  9. Commit: Commits new report file and pushes changes
  10. Sync: Force pushes updated tags with annotations

Key Features

  • Automatic Triggering: No manual intervention needed for new releases
  • Comprehensive Reports: Include all VFB metrics and comparative analysis
  • Dual Storage: Reports stored both as git tag annotations and markdown files
  • Maintenance: Automated cleanup and validation
  • Documentation: Full documentation for all components
  • Backward Compatibility: All existing tags updated with proper reports

Usage Examples

View a release report:

git show v2025-05-14

Manual report generation:

TARGET_TAG=v2025-05-14 python3 scripts/generate_release_report.py

Batch regeneration:

python3 scripts/generate_release_reports_batch.py

System maintenance:

python3 scripts/cleanup.py

🎯 Mission Accomplished

The VFB release reporting system is now fully automated and organized. Future releases will automatically receive comprehensive reports without any manual intervention, providing clear visibility into VFB's content evolution over time.
