A computational proof-of-concept demonstrating that aging is reversible information loss, not irreversible physical decay.
"If aging is the accumulation of Shannon entropy in gene regulatory networks, then reversing it is an error correction problem, not a medical one."
We reframed aging as a control theory problem and built the first computational framework that:
- Quantifies aging as measurable Shannon entropy (not metaphoricallyβoperationally)
- Demonstrates reversibility via algorithmic reprogramming (Yamanaka factors as GRN reset operators)
- Reveals the stability boundary between rejuvenation and cancer
- Treats biology as a noisy communication channel with computable capacity limits
This is not a game. This is a formalization.
Figure 1: Genomic information loss crosses death threshold (5.0) after 7,110 timesteps. Yamanaka factor injection resets entropy to 0, restoring youthful GRN state.
Biological aging is conventionally understood as irreversible damage accumulation. We propose an alternative hypothesis: aging is loss of information fidelity in genetic regulatory networks (GRNs). This reframing collapses aging into three computable quantities: channel capacity, noise accumulation, and error correction.
Using an artificial life simulator with 200+ evolvable chemical components and dynamically evolving gene regulatory networks, we demonstrate:
- Emergent aging without programmed death counters
- Quantifiable entropy accumulation following Shannon's framework
- Algorithmic reversal via minimal state reset (Yamanaka factors modeled as GRN restoration)
- Cancer as control instability (over-correction leads to runaway growth)
This work bridges information theory, control systems, and developmental biology into a unified computational frameworkβone that treats aging not as biology to cure, but as a dynamical system to stabilize.
Key Result: Aging emerges naturally from somatic noise. Reversing it requires only restoring the original regulatory program, not repairing physical damage.
Most aging theories lack computational formalism:
| Theory | Problem |
|---|---|
| Damage Accumulation | What is "damage"? How much is fatal? |
| Epigenetic Drift | Drift toward what? How to measure? |
| Functional Decline | Which functions? What's the phase transition? |
Our Definition:
Aging = Ξ H(GRN | Genome)
Where:
H(GRN | Genome)= conditional entropy of the regulatory network given the germline code- Ξ H increases monotonically with cellular age (second law of thermodynamics for information)
This gives us:
- Measurability: Entropy is a scalar
- Predictability: Noise accumulates at computable rates
- Controllability: Error correction protocols can restore H β 0
We model living systems as:
| Component | Engineering Analog | Implementation |
|---|---|---|
| Genome | Message Source | Genotype.component_genes + rule_genes |
| GRN | Decoder | Developmental rules (IF-THEN logic) |
| Somatic State | Transmitted Signal | Phenotype.somatic_rules (mutable copy) |
| Environment | Noise Channel | Cosmic radiation + replication errors |
| Aging | Channel Degradation | information_entropy accumulation |
| Death | Decoding Failure | Entropy > error_threshold |
def accumulate_somatic_noise(self):
base_rate = settings['entropy_accumulation_rate'] # 0.01
complexity_penalty = len(self.somatic_rules) * 0.05
delta_entropy = base_rate * (1.0 + complexity_penalty)
# DNA Repair (error correction)
if random.random() > settings['repair_fidelity']: # 0.95
self.information_entropy += delta_entropyKey Insight: Complex organisms age faster (more "bits" to corrupt).
When information_entropy > error_threshold:
- Somatic rules corrupt: Actions invert (GROW β DIE)
- Logic gates fail: Conditional operators flip (> becomes <)
- Phenotype collapses: Cells cannot coordinate
This is not programmed death. This is information-theoretic inevitability.
def apply_yamanaka_factors(self):
"""The Cure: Restore germline regulatory program"""
self.somatic_rules = copy.deepcopy(self.genotype.rule_genes)
self.information_entropy = 0.0
self.is_senescent = FalseNot regenerative medicine. Not damage repair. Pure information restoration.
