Following someone writes a row and does nothing else. No feed, no following count on your own profile, no notification.
Follow 20 people and your experience is identical to following none.
Related to #22, which wants the follower and following counts clickable. That one assumes a following count exists to click, and right now it does not render at all.

Fix
Add a Following view listing prompts from people you follow, and show the following count on profiles.
No migration needed. Select the ids you follow, then .in('user_id', ids). getFollowingCount is sitting there ready to use.
Done when
Following someone puts their prompts in your Following feed, unfollowing takes them out, the empty state points you somewhere to find creators, and profiles show a following count.
