WorthCrunch — Solar Savings & Payback Calculator (2026)

Live: https://worthcrunchhq.github.io/

A free, 100% client-side calculator that estimates home-solar cost, payback period, and 25-year savings — updated for 2026, after the U.S. federal residential solar tax credit (Section 25D) expired for systems placed in service after Dec 31, 2025. Most calculators online still bake in the old 30% credit and now show the wrong numbers; this one models the post-credit reality (cash / loan / lease / PPA), by state, with every assumption visible and editable — and no email, no signup, no tracking of your inputs.

📊 Open dataset (free, CC BY 4.0)

data/solar-by-state-2026.json — estimated 2026 solar cost, payback, and 25-year savings for all 50 states + DC (average home, cash purchase), plus the underlying peak-sun-hours and average electricity rates. Free to reuse with attribution / a link back to WorthCrunch.

How it works

annual production ≈ system_kW × peak_sun_hours × 365 × 0.83 derate × shading, sized to offset ~100% of usage; net cost after incentives (federal = $0 for 2026 cash/loan); savings grown 3%/yr for electricity inflation, reduced 0.5%/yr for panel degradation; payback = year cumulative savings exceed net cost. Full methodology on the site. Estimates use state-average data — a transparent ballpark, not an engineering quote.
